Hello all! My name is Vivian Chen and I am currently in my second year at the Macaulay Honors College at Hunter College. My hobbies include swimming, eating, painting, reading, and traveling. Although I grew up in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, I have been commuting to Manhattan for school since the 7th grade, familiarizing myself with the NYC subway system. I find the transit systems fun to compare when I visit different countries, from Hong Kong’s newer subways to France’s century-old subways. I love to travel, but have not considered that my passion for visiting new countries could be applied to my studies.
When I first started college, I struggled with what I wanted to major in. I shifted from computer science and media, knowing I wanted to do something that could incorporate both fields. I was introduced to the geographic field by one of my friends at Hunter – he was taking a GIS class at that time and told me about the technologies used in mapping. Since then, I have tried to immerse myself in all things geography, from scrolling through Facebook pages to applying to intern here, at the American Geographical Society. I am eager to learn and improve my geographical skills through research, writing, and sharing ideas with my fellow interns!
