Gotham Greens: Growing pesticide-free produce in 100% clean energy powered urban greenhouses

Gotham Greens is a startup urban agriculture company that was founded in 2009 in Brooklyn, NY. The founders, driven by a sense of duty to address ecological issues facing our agricultural system, built the company’s flagship greenhouse- the first commercial scale rooftop greenhouse in the United States- in 2011.

The founders had a vision for a local, urban farm operation that could offer New Yorkers the freshest and highest quality culinary ingredients, year-round, at competitive prices. Since then, the company has built additional greenhouse facilities in New York City and Chicago totaling 170,000 square feet, and has set out to expand its operations to cities around the country to create a brand of ‘local,’ premium quality produce.

Gotham Greens’ pesticide-free produce is grown using ecologically sustainable methods, 100% clean energy powered, climate-controlled urban rooftop greenhouses. The company provides retail, restaurant and institutional customers with reliable, year-round, local supply of produce grown under high standards of food safety and environmental sustainability.

Urban agriculture promotes the sustainability of our cities and urban food systems by decreasing the demand for non-local food that is produced on distant rural farms and transported far distances to be sold in city groceries and supermarkets. Reducing food transportation demands reduces energy used for fuel, along with carbon dioxide emissions from the trucks that travel miles and miles from farms to cities. This in turn, reduces a city’s ecological footprint and encourages urban environmental sustainability.

Gotham Green’s commercial greenhouses reduce the negative environmental impacts of an unsustainable agricultural system and instead promote a sustainable urban food system that increases access and availability to fresh, healthy, and local produce for city residents and businesses.
