Urbane is a company that helps people understand a new city, beyond what is offered by ordinary street maps. The Urbane team creates maps that replace place names (ex., Beverly Hills) with locally crowd-sourced adjectives (ex., rich and famous) in fun, quirky and informative ways so that users can understand neighborhoods like locals when they relocate or explore. They have over 100,000 monthly users on their website that keep them on their toes about up to date insight into cities. The Urbane team conducts its research through interviews with local people in the featured cities and crowd-sourcing of information.
The company is also looking to expand its focus, and has had interviews and inquiries from companies in the real estate sector, prompting their interest in taking their localized data to the next step. Several of Urbane’s users utilize Urbane as a third-party verification process to understand new cities outside of their friends, family, or work colleagues. This has shifted Urbane’s focused past just selling physical maps, and towards putting all of their content online to orient the data specifically towards the real estate sector. This way individuals and agents can find the perfect neighborhoods to relocate.
