Today is International Peace Day, and with the rising threat of terrorism, escalation of several internal conflicts, and further outbreaks of unrest worldwide, there has never been a more pertinent time to question the state of peace, and to understand what we need to do to mitigate violence in the future.
The theme of this year’s commemoration is “Partnerships for Peace – Dignity for All” which aims to highlight the importance of all segments of society to work together to strive for peace.
In honor of International Peace Day, our Map of the Week uses Global Peace Index Data from Vision of Humanity, to highlight the differences in the level of peacefulness around the world. The index gauges global peace using three broad themes, including the level of safety and security in society, the extent of domestic and international conflict and the degree of militarisation. We have also added some key recent conflicts in different geographical locations which may be useful in further understanding the levels of peacefulness around the globe!
