Map of the Week: Queer Owned Businesses

By Aaron Eben

In today’s interconnected world, maps have become an essential tool for travelers seeking to navigate unfamiliar places. However, for members of the LGBTQ+ community, finding safe and inclusive spaces while traveling can be a challenge. Everywhere Is Queer, created by Charlie Sprinkman, is an interactive map that helps people locate queer-owned businesses across the globe. Since its launch in January 2022, Everywhere Is Queer has amassed over 2,000 registered businesses, offering diverse services and products for LGBTQ+ individuals and allies.

Growing up in the Milwaukee area and now residing in Portland, Oregon, Sprinkman developed a passion for discovering queer-friendly spaces during his travels. Inspired by his own experiences and the desire to foster a sense of community for others, he embarked on a mission to create a comprehensive platform that would connect people to queer-owned businesses, regardless of their location

Unlike traditional maps focusing on physical establishments, Everywhere Is Queer embraces a broader perspective of what constitutes a queer-owned business. The map encompasses 14 categories, including online stores, real estate, restaurants, gyms, and wellness centers. By offering such diversity, the platform ensures that individuals can find queer-owned businesses catering to their specific needs, both online and offline. Since its inception, Everywhere Is Queer has made a profound impact on individuals worldwide. Sprinkman emphasizes that the map aims to celebrate not only queer individuals but also their allies. The platform strives to encompass everyone, regardless of their identity or appearance.
